Largely self-taught,Avery is today regarded as one of the great early modern American artists. His inspired palette, simplified forms and unwavering commitment to a figurative tradition have secured him a place in art history as well as in the hearts of the American public. Always at odds with the dominate style of the time,be it the American Scene Painting and Social Realism of the 1930s and '40s or the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s,Avery's oeuvre is a labor of singular dedication.Avery's signature figurative style characterized by simple forms and flattened shapes filled with arbitrary color "in the manner of Matisse"" was fully developed by the 1940s.   He continued to explore the figure as a subject matter but also became known for his distinctive landscape paintings.  His work as a colorist greatly influenced succeeding generations of artists, specifically Color Field painters Mark Rothko,Barnett Newman, and Adolph Gottlieb. The painting Bare Tree Green Sea,from 1959,was painted during the second season that Avery and his wife spent in Provincetown Bay,Massachusetts.   This work continues Avery’s increasingly simplified compositions, since the 1940’s,with fewer color shapes and an elimination of detail but with extraordinarily vivid colors.  These works were inspired by his direct observation of the natural world.   The shimmering reflection of the moon on the rippling water and the distinct separation of color shapes were used to clearly demarcate the different elements of the painting rather than blur them, which was evident from this series of paintings by Avery."
