Paul Pletka meticulously researches his subject matter for accuracy of symbolic images and poignancy of his portraits. Nataos, translated from Natoji, means “general power pervading nature and acting through the spirits sun power” and is often referred to as the Sun Dance. The Sun Dance was performed by many of the Plains Indians but was mostly associated with the Blackfoot Tribe. In this painting we find many distinguishing features from the Nataos ceremony such as medicine bundles, ritualistic behavior, tipi painting and the ceremonial dress and headdress.
