Born in Cuba, Luis Cruz Azaceta immigrated to New York at the age of 18 and then moved to New Orleans where he has been living since 1992. Blue Seven is representative of the work that Azaceta began in 2000 which borrowed elements from his earlier Millennium series. Rows of black lines, alternating with circles and squares, recall bricks from walls or fragments of the elongated bodies or passageways from the paintings that preceded this series. He views this work as suggestions of rhythmic beat representing chants and meditations that provide spiritual comfort during a life threatening journey.
